On 17th November 2011, L&OD Roundtable and www.ItsMyAscent.com organized a Master Class on "Employeeship" by Saumya Chandra, Senior Consultant, InspireOne

MASTER CLASS on Employeeship

Success in corporate life is about mobilizing the energy of all employees to ensure the survival and growth of the company. Both leaders and team members need to do things differently to achieve this success on a continuous basis. Every individual needs to be committed towards the success of the company. It is that unique culture where the entire workforce shares responsibility for success and failure. What is required of both leaders and team members to develop that special personal commitment called Employeeship. If a company has to survive then the employees have to bring their 'Hearts To Work'.

What does the organization need to do differently to create this unique culture? How can each manager and team member contribute to creating this culture? How would it impact the organization? This was among the many things discussed on the 17th of November 2011 at the L&OD Roundtable, held at Sunville Banquets,Worli.

Saumya Chandra, a senior Consultant from InspireOne conducted the session –which invited one of the largest turnouts as on date. Around 95-100 people attended the interactive session which was rich in terms of content as well as levels of participation. The session brought to the fore a number of questions, most of which were answered very articulately by the quorum present emphasising that learning is but a collective exercise. The Roundtable facilitated collective thinking and reflection with the facilitator providing a number of real life applications of Employeeship-using excellent presentation aids.

Till we meet at the next L&OD Roundtable. Watch this space for more.

The Neuroscience of Leadership Development

On 23rd Feb 2011, L&OD Roundtable and Times Ascent organized a Master Class on 'The Neuroscience of Leadership' facilitated by Ravi Sharma Co-founder NeoSynapses, an emerging leadership development consultancy.

Sujaya Banerjee, Chief Learning Officer, Essar Group, set the context and emphasized the need for modern day managers to be constantly 'on the ball', and learning new skills, new behaviours and new capabilities to succeed in their roles. The L&OD Roundtable is a place where learning and HR practitioners can share their knowledge and expertise with an emphasis on practical application of learning back in the workplace.

Ravi Sharma opened by pointing out that the L&OD community has worked on the premise that any behaviour change that is not rooted in a corresponding mindset change may not be stable. This is where a great opportunity lies. How the mind works is based on the observation of behaviour patterns, formulating new models, and then predicting future probable behaviours. While this approach is useful most of the time, there may be situations where it may lead to glaringly wrong conclusions. Remember, till about 400 years ago the observation of behaviour postulated that the Earth is stationary and the Sun goes around the Earth. Finally a study of the 'hardware' had to come in to correct that notion. A lot of new research on the brain (the human thinking 'hardware'), done in the last two decades, post the introduction of techniques like fMRI (functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging), EEG (Electroencephalography) is like-wise challenging some age old beliefs we have about how our mind works. This brain research is unveiling many powerful concepts which show promise of a tremendous ability to transform human behaviour.

The Neuroscience of Leadership Development

Ravi took a very attentive class of sixty leading HR professionals through an experiential exercise to simulate how we can get past a breakdown (when depending only on the old accumulated patterns in our brains is not useful in the face of a new challenge). Using the concept of 'the anatomy of insight creation' the group learnt how to 'think about thinking' and supported each other in moving towards a solution which, at the start of the simulation appeared practically impossible. This new understanding of how our brain works, to create new patterns, enthralled the audience.

Ravi mentioned some of the pathbreaking research being undertaken by some leading neuroscientists, and outlined some immediate practical applications in the areas of coaching, influencing change, problem solving, relationship management, etc..

The involvement and buzz in the room, and the way in which copies of the research reference material were snapped up by participants were evidence of the impact created by another very successful 'Master Class' of the L&OD Roundtable. For breaking news from the L&OD Roundtable, "watch this space"!
